Mabelmoss — Stompling Counter Critter Field Guide

Meet Mabelmoss

Meet Mabelmoss, a wonderfully scruffy Stompling who lives deep in the forest beneath old trees, mossy logs, and anywhere humans have recently had a picnic.

Origin & lore

Her entire body is covered in rough, wiry markings that look remarkably like fur. They are not fur.

Early researchers discovered this after attempting to brush one. Mabelmoss has not forgiven science.

Like most Stomplings, Mabelmoss has an enormous mouth, tiny floppy ears, oversized feet, and the general body shape of a potato that has made several questionable life choices. Her most distinguishing feature is her magnificent single tooth.

Young Stomplings normally grow several. Mabelmoss grew one.

Inspected it carefully. And apparently decided the job was finished.

Diet Acorns • Mushrooms • Cracker crumbs • Picnic leftovers • Questionable berries • Things found under logs Mabelmoss strongly prefers crunchy foods because they make her tooth feel important.

Appearance

Look for a round amber-brown body covered in deeply carved shaggy markings, floppy ears, enormous feet, a tiny tail, a ridiculous little tuft on top of her head, and one extremely confident tooth.

Known quirks

Mabelmoss spends much of her day sitting beneath trees with her mouth wide open.
Researchers originally believed this was an elaborate Stompling hunting technique.
It isn't.
She's waiting for food to fall in.
Surprisingly, this works often enough that she sees absolutely no reason to change strategies.
Once adopted, Mabelmoss adapts remarkably well to countertop life and happily guards salt, jewelry, candy, coins, keys, and other small treasures.
She also considers unattended snacks to be small treasures.

Personality notes

Mabelmoss is patient, hopeful, and magnificently stubborn.
She trusts gravity, picnic baskets, and her single important tooth far more than she trusts hurried plans.
